Today’s society is fucked in many ways.
We have fewer problems than ever before. And still, technology and all the good shit we have now seem to have made people more dissatisfied than ever.
See, most people nowadays fall into either one of two categories:
I’m awesome and you all suck. (= I deserve special treatment)
I suck and you’re all superior to me. (= I deserve special treatment)
What we don’t realize though, is that we’re not special! Chances are if you have a problem, other people are having it too, or have had it before you. And this simply means that you’re not a victim in some circumstances!
Still not convinced?
Take Hercules for example. The guy literally went to Hell and back, was driven crazy by a Goddess who forced him to kill his children and wife, and suffered in all kinds of ways.
And guess what? He chose that shit! (Literally)
Hercules chose the path of virtue. And although you don't have to suffer the pain that Hercules did, you may still benefit from a less extreme, though similar philosophy.
Here are 3 principles of stoicism to apply to your life :
You can't change the world around you, but you choose how to react to it.
Our minds work at 100 mph to fill in the blanks for whatever happens to us. That’s why you can have your whole day ruined by your crush ghosting you.
But keep in mind: You never know the full story.
So stop dwelling on your past. It’ll make you miserable. It’s like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces.
Emotions are a fragile compass to rely on. They're continually changing, evolving, and alternating.
Out of your hands? Then out of your mind…
Just show up. Don't obsess over outcomes.
Some things are just out of your control. But does that mean you should stop aspiring to anything and accept failure with no fucks given? No!
The amount of work you put in definitely increases the chances of you succeeding in your goals. But it doesn't guarantee it! And you should accept that.
The only outcome in your control is whether you showed up or not and whether you did your best at a given time.
That's an essential concept for all the aspiring entrepreneurs out there.
Remember: Entrepreneurship is filled with failure. And you have to learn to accept it and identify lessons to take away instead of victimizing yourself or beating yourself up.
Memento Mori: Remember you will Die
This one is about finding your greater purpose and finding meaning in your life.
After returning from battle, Roman generals would have people whispering in their ear "memento mori". To remind them that the glory was temporary.
See, they didn’t let their wealth and fame dictate their happiness or sense of accomplishment. So why should we?
👉 Happiness is an internal process, and looking for it outside will only bury it deeper inside.
💡 Death has a way of making stuff feel less important.
And it does the same for people. As an entrepreneur, an over-inflated ego is a recipe for disaster. Don’t take yourself too seriously if you wanna learn and grow.
